We protect and promote the human rights of people with mental health problems, learning disabilities, dementia and related conditions.

We are currently recruiting for an experienced nursing practitioner to join our team. Your role will require you to have direct contact with service users, their relatives and carers in respect of their concerns about their mental health and/or the care and treatment they receive. You will also be required to carry out investigation work and deal with casework pertaining to your allocated area. While the role is based in Edinburgh, you will be attached to a team covering a particular geographical area of Scotland and will be required to visit services across the whole of Scotland. You must be qualified as an RMN or RNLD and have experience of operating at senior practitioner level. You must be able to communicate effectively with service users, carers, advocates and service providers and have exceptional influencing skills.

As Head of Project you will recruit and lead a small team, responsible for progressing two important projects.

The first project stems from a recent Scottish Government review recommending that a system be developed for investigating all deaths of patients who, at the time of death, were subject to an order under either the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003 or part VI of the Criminal Procedure (Scotland) Act 1995 (whether in hospital or in the community, including those who had their detention suspended).

The second project is to progress work on developing a system of review when people who have been in touch with mental health services commit homicide.

Working autonomously with strong communication and influencing skills, you will lead on the full range of project management activities from scoping and researching of materials to development of costed business cases and testing and option appraisal of any new systems, actively engaging and consulting with stakeholders, families and carers. You will also need well developed problem solving and analytical skills, the ability to generate innovative ideas and practices and a track record of building consensus amongst different stakeholders.

You should have a postgraduate professional or managerial qualification and a first degree in a relevant discipline, or equivalent experience gained in an operational role.

Experience of carrying out investigations and the governance of investigatory systems to improve practice and knowledge of mental health and human rights legislation is highly desirable.

The post will be for 18 months, with the possibility of extension.
