Part of an award-winning Communication & Policy Department, our Scottish Empty Homes Partnership is a Scottish Government funded project aimed at enabling private sector empty homes to be brought back into use across Scotland. The Partnership achieves this via a mix of policy work, capacity building, training, best practice sharing and awareness raising with councils, community groups and others. It’s also home to the national Empty Homes Advice Service - a public facing advice line that anyone can call for help or to report an empty home.

About the role

Your challenge will be to provide first level advice and referrals to empty home owners, those with concerns about empty homes, people interested in buying and renovating empty homes and empty homes practitioners. Indeed, we'll rely on you to deliver a professional, impartial, pragmatic and outcome focussed telephone and email advice service. As well as handling initial enquiries, you’ll get involved in some of the more complex enquiries or cases, for which you’ll be supported by a line manager and other members of the Scottish Empty Homes Partnership team.

About you

Commercially aware, client focused and totally at home collaborating with others, you have great organisational and time management skills too. What's more, you respect other people’s opinions, are comfortable answering enquiries both over the phone and via email and have the communication skills it takes to empower clients to self-help where appropriate. Proficiency using case management systems and Microsoft Office applications is important too, together with the ability to type.

Our advice and support Hubs located in Glasgow, Dundee, Aberdeen and Edinburgh provide a range of services, including money and debt advice and legal advocacy and representation. There are also support services in Glasgow, Dumfries and South Lanarkshire delivering housing support for vulnerable people and families who are homeless and a dedicated service working with Young Runaways in Tayside. In addition, we have services focussing on specific client groups such as prisoners, older people and veterans, as well as a free telephone helpline. This particular role is based at our Edinburgh hub.

About the role

As an Adviser, we'll rely on you to deliver a professional, impartial, pragmatic and outcome focussed service to our clients whilst working to Shelter Quality Standards. Day-to-day, you'll be providing advice on all areas of housing law, homelessness, money and debt and welfare benefits and specialist casework related to these areas. You'll also get to undertake work on aspects of complex advocacy cases. Contributing to local and national policy and practice development will be important too, as will representing clients at reviews, tribunals and appeals, with relevant training provided if needed. Conducting initial interviews, agreeing clients' needs, writing case plans and keeping accurate records - all are part and parcel of this interesting and varied role.

About you

To succeed, you'll need demonstrable relevant experience, a proactive, collaborative and results-driven approach, sensitivity to other needs and the communication skills it takes to positively influence others. We'll also be looking for a flair for getting to the root of client's underlying needs and supporting them through change. The Fife NHS Intervention project will is a highly innovative initiative to test a new approach to providing services in NHS Scotland hospitals for patients who are homeless. Key aims include improving working links between health and housing services, providing homeless individuals with the right support to improve their health outcomes and reducing re-admission rates among this cohort. The project will run from Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy and focus on developing an innovative service delivery model to support the Scottish Government’s decisive shift towards preventative spending in Scotland’s public services.

About the role

You’ll play a lead role in setting up and establishing this service, in collaboration with hospital staff and partner agencies. Your focus will be on promoting and embedding the delivery model and referral pathways, raising awareness, undertaking patient assessments, setting up and coordinating housing plans and collating statistical information on hospital discharge. In short, you’ll help deliver a highly innovative intervention targeting homeless people attending the Emergency Department of Victoria Hospital. And, because it’s a developmental role, there will be significant opportunities to develop your knowledge and skills and enhance your career, as well as the chance to gain a professional SQA accredited housing qualification.

About you

You’ll need proven experience of preparing, planning and delivering briefings and/or group work sessions and working with a wide variety of stakeholders, both statutory and non-statutory. We’ll also be looking for a proactive, customer-focused approach and a real commitment to achieving the very best outcomes for clients. Someone who is great at influencing others, you’re able to maintain your professionalism and communicate effectively in a range of situations too. What’s more, you're not afraid to challenge the status quo and introduce new ideas when appropriate. The ‘Street Legal’ project is a recently formed partnership with CLAN Childlaw that’s funded by the National Lottery Community Fund. Its goal is to prevent homelessness and engage in early action to deal with the causes of homelessness for children, young people and families. It also aims to improve access to specialist legal advice and representation and increase the capacity of Edinburgh’s third sector organisations to use the law to prevent homelessness through the delivery of lawyer led workshops.

About the role

As a Housing Solicitor, we’ll rely on you to maintain an active caseload and provide legal advice and representation to families and young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in Edinburgh, in partnership with CLAN. You’ll also be responsible for developing housing and homelessness law for families, children and young people and devising and delivering lawyer led training for front line third sector services. Working collaboratively within the sector to directly address issues that may arise with the implementation of the ‘Ending Homeless Together High Level Action Plan’ will be important too, as will promoting an understanding of the legal framework and ensuring a rights based approach from the outset.

About you

Proactive, customer-focused and driven to achieve the very best outcomes for clients, your substantial experience of handling a wide range of housing cases in the public and private sector includes issues relating to homelessness, security of tenure and possession proceedings. What's more, you have a sound knowledge of publicly funded legal aid work, including legal representation and legal help. You’re great at influencing others too, and are able to maintain your professionalism and communicate effectively in a range of situations. As well as a free telephone and digital helpline, which helps over 22,000 people each year, Shelter Scotland’s advice service consists of a number of projects and four core Integrated City Hubs. One such hub is in Glasgow, providing a range of services including money and debt advice, legal advocacy and representation.

About the role

You’ll be joining a team delivering a professional and impartial telephone, digital and email advice service to people experiencing housing problems. This will involve carrying out initial fact finding interviews to identify and agree clients’ needs and giving advice on all areas of housing and welfare benefits law. We’ll also rely on you to enter details onto a case management system accurately and punctually.

About you

To succeed, you’ll need experience of telephone advice work relating to housing law, welfare benefits, debt or similar with a strong client focus and excellent people skills. Good listening skills to get to the root of clients’ underlying needs are important too, as is a proactive, results-driven approach and the ability to contribute new ideas and approaches. Proficiency using Microsoft Office applications and case management systems is also essential.

About the role

Responsible for supporting the development and implementation of public campaigns and political influencing to ensure the adoption of our policy proposals by decision makers, you’ll make a real contribution to Shelter Scotland’s strategic objectives. Along the way, you’ll work closely with other teams, especially Marcomms and our Hubs, as together you develop and implement strategies to deliver our policy and campaign objectives. Planning Shelter Scotland’s public affairs engagement both nationally and locally, attending meetings, events and street campaigning days, getting involved in campaign communications and identifying opportunities to work in partnership with other organisations to develop campaigning responses and produce outputs – all are elements of this high profile role.

About you

Used to working on public affairs, either in an agency or similar role in the voluntary sector, you will have a good understanding of Scotland’s political landscape and understand national and local politics. You’ve also worked in partnership with others to take forward projects with a clear focus on objectives and have worked in public campaigning. You’re also adept at linking policy outputs to communications activities, campaign objectives and the wider political context – linked to a theory of change. What’s more, you’re creative, innovative and proactive, willing to challenge the status quo as well as introduce new ideas, methods and processes and get involved, you have excellent written and verbal communication skills and are proficient using IT and databases.

Who are we looking for?

You will develop and encourage your own and your team’s interest and passion in merchandising the shop to attract those customers and donors through the door as well as continually developing your own and your team’s knowledge of who Shelter are and what we do.

It goes without saying that your volunteers, under your leadership, will run an exceptional shop that will raise as much money as possible for Shelter’s work.
