This is an exciting fixed term role that aims to build on the success of the Climate Fringe after COP26. The Climate Fringe platform aims to build and strengthen the climate movement by helping people to connect with different events and organisations. This role would suit someone who is passionate about climate action, movement building and the role events can have in creating change, can create a buzz through communications and who enjoys bringing people together.

Stop Climate Chaos Scotland, a coalition of over 60 civil society organisations in Scotland campaigning together on climate change, is seeking a new Co-Chair.

This is a voluntary position and the new Co-Chair will work in close partnership with a Co-Chair already identified.

The appointment of a Co-Chair will be for three years in the first instance. The successful candidate will initially be supported by other board members and their co-chair who will already be in post.

Our Co-Chairs will work with our Board, and our expanding membership, to deepen our Coalition’s influence at a critical and exciting time for climate action in Scotland.

Role

To perform the role of Co-Chair, you’ll need a rather special set of qualities. Chief amongst them is an informed passion and energy for the action needed to tackle the climate emergency.

Beyond this, SCCS is a member-led coalition and as such requires cooperation and consensus building from all involved – and particularly from its Co-Chairs.

In addition, we are looking for a Co-Chair who will:

• Help oversee the strategic direction and governance of SCCS
• Help manage SCCS’s Coalition Manager and assist in managing wider Board and Coalition relationships
• Chair SCCS Board meetings (six per year) – alongside the Co-Chair – and work with the Coalition Manager to develop agendas and board papers
• Alongside the Co-chair, be a spokesperson for SCCS at external events and with the media
• Alongside the Co-chair, liaise with member organisations to ensure their views are acknowledged and represented
• Attend meetings with the Scottish Government, MSPs and other external bodies.

Criteria

As Co-Chair of Stop Climate Chaos Scotland, you should be able to demonstrate the following skills and experience:

• Successfully led the strategic direction of an organisation (in a paid or voluntary position)
• Management of senior staff
• Ability to chair meetings in a fair and impartial way
• Strong communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills, including public speaking
• Some understanding of climate change policy in Scotland and beyond, and its links to wider policy areas
• Commitment to equal opportunities and anti racism
• Strong analytical, administration and organisational skills.

The successful candidate should be willing to spend time on SCCS-related work for 2-4 days per month. Some of this time should be during the normal working week to accommodate Board and other meetings.

• Act as an SCCS spokesperson for the media and at external events;
• Liaise with member organisations to ensure their views are acknowledged and represented;

Attend meetings with the Scottish Government, MSPs and other external bodies.

The successful candidate for the Chair of SCCS should be able to demonstrate the following skills and

experience:

• Successfully led the strategic direction of an organisation (in a paid or voluntary position);
• Management of senior staff;
• Ability to chair meetings in a fair and impartial way;Strong communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills, including public speaking;
• Understanding of climate change policy in Scotland and beyond, and its links to wider policy areas;
• Commitment to equal opportunities;
• Strong analytical, administration and organisational skills.

The successful candidate should be willing to work on SCCS related work for a minimum of 3-4 days a month, of which at least two days should be during the normal working week to accommodate board and other meetings. We are open to this role being worked as a job share between two co-chairs
