Schools Facilitator

  • Full time
  • £22,500 – £24,000
  • Based in Schools in Fife with work in other parts of central Scotland
  • Closing 15th July 2019

  • Advertised from 4th July 2019
  • Fixed term contract - 31 August 2020

School of Hard Knocks works with unemployed adults and school children at risk of exclusion to give participants the tools to improve their lives. This is principally achieved by teaching a strong set of values, attitudes, behaviours and skills. Physical activity and class-based session are combined to teach, demonstrate and impress the key messages.

SOHK’s Course Facilitator will be responsible for a mixture of frontline delivery in Scotland, predominantly schools work, in Fife. This is a brand new role that will provide excitement, challenge and a huge sense of purpose for the right candidate. You will be delivering the charity’s social inclusion and pre-employment courses at various sites in Fife, Edinburgh, Glasgow and across the central Scotland belt. Each course will centre around rugby union or other high impact sports, combined with a unique psychology, curriculum and one-to-one and group mentoring. Working as part of our Scottish team, you will focus on delivering the schools curriculum of the charity, mentoring young people and project managing courses. You will market the programme to new schools and build strong relationships with existing schools; deliver each day of the programme; and support participants on a 1:1 basis to address issues in their lives and help them reach goals. If required, you will also support our existing staff in delivery SOHK’s adult employability programmes.

Each day of an SOHK course entails a mixture of responsibilities – you need to be a project manager, coordinating with your team and coaches to deliver each day of the course; and a mentor, coach and role model for the participants. When not on the ground, you will work with interns and other team members to build the charity’s network of local and national employers, provide ongoing support to the programme’s participants, help to measure and report on the impact of your work and help execute any other areas of the charity’s strategy as it grows north of the border.

SOHK’s schools programme is a 3-year intervention, working with groups of around 20 pupils from S2 through until they finish S4 and complete their N4/5s. The pupils will be chosen by the school and will typically be the ‘hardest to reach’ young people. We will work with them for half a day every week, delivering rugby training, classroom sessions on subjects such as growth mindset, goal setting and body image and we’ll deliver weekly 1:1s for each pupil. The programme will be evaluated by SOHK staff, teachers, parents and the pupils themselves.
