The Law Society of Scotland is the professional body for Scotland’s 12,000 solicitors. We regulate and represent all practising solicitors in Scotland and also have an important duty towards the public interest.

We rely enormously on our committees to consider everything from access to justice to rights of audience, from reforming our laws to regulating our profession. The decisions made affect each and every one of us.

Our committees are made up of both solicitors and non-solicitors. Committee membership is as diverse as the subject matter covered and membership is demanding but rewarding. This month there is an wide range of committees for non-solicitors to join - a total of 11.

We currently have vacancies on the following committees

· Admissions subcommittee – which deals with our admission system for solicitors.

· Banking, Company and Insolvency Law subcommittee – which deals with these three areas of law reform.

· Civil Legal Aid Quality Assurance committee – which deals with all assessing the work of solicitors who conduct civil legal aid work.

· Education and Training subcommittee – which deals with the setting of education and training standards for all solicitors.

· Employment law subcommittee – which deals with this area of law reform.

· Intellectual Property Law subcommittee – which deals with law reform in this area.

· Practising certificate subcommittee – which deals with complex applications from members for practising certificates.

· Property and Land Law Reform subcommittee – which deals with law reform in these two areas.

· Regulatory Committee – which is the main committee which oversees all of the Society’s regulatory work.

· Rights of Audience subcommittee– which deals with the appointment of solicitors to the Higher Courts by granting extended rights of audience.

· Rules, Waiver and Guidance subcommittee – which deals with consideration of the Society’s practice rules, requests for waivers and guidance.

· Tax Law subcommittee – which deals with law reform in this area.

· Technology law & practice committee – which deals with law reform in this area.

Travel expenses are paid to all committee and subcommittee members. Meetings are held in the Society’s offices in Edinburgh.
