We aim to engage and empower individuals and community groups in taking meaningful action to address the climate and nature emergency, working towards a just, thriving and resilient Edinburgh. Our membership is open to any community group and individual in Edinburgh.

Are you looking for an opportunity to use your skills to make a difference to the environment, local communities and Edinburgh as a whole? An opportunity has arisen to join our trustees!

You will be interested in joining ECCAN’s trustees if you have a personal commitment to supporting any climate or nature action.

ECCAN is looking to co-opt trustees. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to supporting community-led action in Edinburgh; to address the climate and nature emergency in ways that create a just, thriving and resilient city.

A recently established charity, the trustees are responsible for facilitating the community-led development of a strategy and a long-term plan, and making decisions to oversee the running of ECCAN. The Charity has received a year’s start up funding from the Scottish Government, and trustees will be responsible for:

- providing leadership, direction, and advice to the ECCAN staff team;

- designing, inviting applications for, and distributing community funding;

- securing the charity’s long-term organisational and financial future.

trustees contribute to the delivery of ECCAN Mission Statement. This is a volunteer role that will provide the right candidate with the opportunity to be an integral part of our dedicated team and make a positive impact in Edinburgh, its communities, and environment.

THE ORGANISATION

ECCAN supports community-led action in Edinburgh to address the climate and nature emergency and work for a just, thriving and resilient city.

Our network empowers individuals and community groups, providing resources, support, and opportunities for meaningful climate and environmental action.

ECCAN was set up in May 2022 and we have now grown to be a network of 247 members including 76 community groups. Our dedication is to the environment and to members, operating to constantly recognise and respond to our community’s needs.

TRUSTEES TERMS OF APPOINTMENT

Terms of Office

- Trustees will be co-opted until the next election at the Annual General Meeting in November 2024

- This is a voluntary position, but reasonable expenses are reimbursed i.e. childcare, travel etc.

Time Commitment

  • Around seven hours per month, of which trustees meetings lasting two hours every
  • month.

Members Support and Events Lead

The role of ECCAN’s Members Support and Events Lead is dynamic and multifaceted, serving as an important bridge between the members and the organisation. Operating within Edinburgh's four localities, this person will frequently travel and be the primary point of contact for the network’s members, offering project development support and enabling groups to take forward their ideas.

This is an exciting opportunity for an individual who is passionate about community engagement to support the development of community climate action plans, climate resilience plans, or local place planning for groups, organisations, and neighbourhoods in Edinburgh.

You will be a hands-on, adaptable and approachable coordinator who can diligently curate and distribute resources, ensuring their relevance and accessibility for ECCAN’s membership while also designing and administering feedback mechanisms to sustain member participation.

This will include planning and delivering in ECCAN’s in person and virtual events of different scales throughout the year and building capacity of member organisations to deliver compelling climate and social justice activities of their own.

This will involve conducting outreach talks and workshops for groups, managing and collaborating effectively with volunteers, liaising with speakers and trainers, and delivering sessions on carbon literacy and other pertinent topics across Edinburgh's localities.

Hours of Work: 28 hours a week flexible with some evening / weekend work (for which time off in lieu is provided). Potential for job share or compressed hours.

Additional Requirements: The post holder will be subject to a Disclosure Scotland check.

Location: You will be based in member premises in the heart of the city, working closely with other agencies and colleagues across Edinburgh. Flexible hot desking is possible in various community locations as well as home working.

Operations Lead

This is an exciting opportunity for an individual who is passionate about climate action, good governance and charity management to take a key supporting role in building the community led network and ensuring its success.

This person will be an excellent administrator with a keen eye for detail, supporting the organisation to achieve its aims and objectives through the management of everyday operations.

This will include ensuring compliance with all policy and related expectations of a publicly-funded organisation, managing HR strategies, volunteer agreements and day-to-day finances such as payroll and expenses.

As part of a fast-paced environment and collaborative team, there will be an opportunity for you to grow and develop in your role. You will initially play a key role in the set up and establishment of management processes and systems for the new charity, the development and implementation of the organisations’ fundraising strategy as well as supporting the networks’ activities and events to ensure their success.

We aim to engage and empower individuals and community groups in taking meaningful action to address the climate and nature emergency, working towards a just, thriving and resilient Edinburgh.

This is part of a strategic Scotland-wide network of regional Climate Action Hubs, supported by SCCAN - Scottish Communities Climate Action Network.

You will have a background as a PA, team administrator or a voluntary organisation administrator, with experience supporting staff and teams to excel in essential organisational activities.

Additional Requirements: The post holder will be subject to a Disclosure Scotland check.

Top job! Network Lead

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced individual who is passionate about community-led climate action to take a leading role in establishing the network and driving its success, through setting the organisational strategy and direction, work plans, and building a team to deliver them. You’ll lead, manage and motivate a small enthusiastic team, overseeing the day to day operations and budget, championing ECCAN’s work across the third sector and supporting the impact of multiple community and voluntary groups.

You’ll use your excellent communication skills to develop trust with internal and external stakeholders and partners, representing the network and building collaborative relationships with key stakeholders including the Scottish Government, City of Edinburgh Council and civil society organisations. You’ll oversee the financial strategy and generation of sustainable income through research, design, writing, and submitting applications for funding to ensure crucial support for our ongoing work and long-term support for our members.
