Fundraising Lead

The main focus of this new role is to grow and develop supporter relationships that secure the longer-term sustainability of ELFB through grants, corporate donations and sponsorships.

This role would be suited to someone with strong written communication skills and relationship building skills who is driven and well organised.

Key responsibilities

Relationship development

  • Respond positively and professionally to supporter enquiries
  • Identify and research funders, develop and maintain a pipeline of prospects
  • Build and maintain relationships with funders
  • Make applications to funders ranging from letters to small family trusts to large and complex lottery or statutory body bids.
  • Ensure funding bid and reporting deadlines are adhered to and maintain productive relationships with all funders
  • Report on performance and social outcomes
  • Actively promote and encourage fundraising activity within the community
  • Represent ELFB at fundraising and networking events as required

Fundraising Strategy

  • Work closely with the Foodbank Manager to establish fundraising targets and strategy
  • Support the development of a calendar of fundraising events
  • Lead the development of supporter communications to effectively engage with all areas of the community across all channels including digital media
  • Ensure compliance with all regulations, codes of practice and best practice in the sector
  • Positively represent ELFB and its work at events, meetings and strive to increase awareness of the Organisations work and need for support
  • Embed a fundraising culture throughout ELFB that maximises all opportunities for engagement and support.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • Experience of working in a fundraising role
  • Experience of securing funds/contracts
  • Experience of developing and submitting successful written applications
  • Excellent written and face to face communication skills and the ability to connect with a range of different people
  • Able to support and contribute in a committed and diverse team
  • Ability to manage time effectively including working to tight deadlines
  • Computer literacy with a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.

Desirable:

  • Experience within the charity voluntary sector
  • Understanding of GDPR and compliance re data handling
  • Understanding of the causes and factors contributing to food insecurity and food poverty, and the need for crisis and more than food responses
  • Knowledge of the funding landscape across Scotland
  • Full Driving License

Money Advice Project: Financial Inclusion Officer

About us

East Lothian foodbank provides emergency food and support to local people who are experiencing financial hardship. We are part of a nationwide network of foodbanks, supported by The Trussell Trust, working to combat poverty and hunger across the UK.

Our money advice service was introduced in October 2022 to reflect our commitment to tackle the underlying financial reasons leading to foodbank use. After a successful first year where our service achieved significant financial gains for our service users, we are looking for the right person to join our team to drive forward the same success in years 2 and 3 of our project.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a motivated and positive individual to help those using our foodbank to access our money advice service to help improve their circumstances over the long-term.

To achieve this you will collaborate closely with our advice partner Musselburgh Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) to ensure that our advice service continues to target those most in need of our support.

You will regularly monitor and review the effectiveness of the project, utilising key data to inform continuous improvement whilst also taking account of feedback from our key partners and those who use our service.

You will also work as part of the wider foodbank team to support our overall operations and service delivery.

Key tasks related to the role

The Financial Inclusion Officer will have responsibility for the service by:

• Further developing and implementing our plan for years 2&3 of the project including piloting new initiatives to engage with potential users of the service

• Identifying individuals who are most likely to benefit from the service and promoting the service to them

• Developing, maintaining and fostering good working relationships with relevant external agencies, including statutory authorities to ensure all relevant organisations are aware of our money advice service and the wider role of East Lothian Foodbank

• Attending and/or presenting at appropriate forums and events

• Ensure a simple referral pathway to the Money Advice Service and clear processes are in place to support this.

• Identify innovative ways to maximise user engagement with the service

• Monitor and review operational procedures and ongoing engagement with our CAB based advice service

• Monitor and review effectiveness of project on a quarterly basis using data from our advice partner

• Working with our advice partner to identify capacity that can facilitate wider access to the service

• Other tasks to support the foodbank as directed by Foodbank Manager

What is the East Lothian Foodbank?

The East Lothian Foodbank is part of a network of 1200 foodbanks operating across the UK, under the umbrella of the Trussell Trust. We provide emergency food and other services to families experiencing food poverty across the whole of East Lothian, operating alongside multiple partner agencies and utilising a team of wonderful volunteers/employees.

What does the ideal candidate look like?

Your skills brought from your own life and work experience will be invaluable in driving the Board to ensure efficient and effective governance in order to support the paid staff and volunteer teams to develop the work of the Foodbank. You will have proven experience of being an independent and strong leader, able to get the most of your teams, able to successfully mediate between differences of opinion, whilst always acting with respect, compassion and integrity. You will have an understanding of the distinctive nature of the charitable sector and a passion for the eradication of food poverty and its underlying causes.

What does the role involve?

You will join the board of trustees as Chair for a three-year unpaid term, chairing monthly meetings to oversee the governance, strategy and funding of East Lothian Foodbank. As Chair, you will be comfortable representing the Food Bank as required, ensuring compliance with the charity’s constitution and applicable legal requirements and ensuring that charity resources are always used responsibility and in a manner consistent with the Foodbank’s objectives. In consultation with the rest of the board, you will be responsible for recruiting new trustees and supporting the manager to employ new staff with relevant skills and experience. You will ensure the board meets with the appropriate frequency, delegating tasks and ensuring that all board decisions are recorded and implemented in a clear and transparent manner.

You will be taking care of day-to-day contacts and building relationships with partners, clients and others with regards to our crisis service. It is important to us that you have a positive, can-do attitude and be prepared to go the extra mile to ensure those we support can access our crisis service and are signposted to other services as required.

This role is key to ensure we maintain our crisis food service to ‘gold standard’. We are looking for a candidate with the ambition, experience and passion to help us grow our services while ensuring we deliver a ‘gold standard’ crisis food service to those that need it, when they need it, during the most challenging of times.

You will play a critical role in ensuring the long-term sustainability and growth of our essential local services during very challenging times and in the face of increasing demand. You will have the skills and experience to develop and build a strong team of staff, volunteers and external partners committed to ensuring no one in need in East Lothian goes without food. Working with the Board of Trustees, you will ensure delivery of our strategic aims, including creative measures to help those experiencing food poverty and deprivation in East Lothian by supporting and encouraging self-help and support schemes, mobilising voluntary and community resources and accessing new sources of funding which can extend the reach, scope and scale of operation of the organisation.

Further priorities will include securing income from fundraising and grant income for our core crisis service and developing and resourcing ‘more than food’ projects and taking a strategic lead in helping shape local responses to the root causes of food poverty across East Lothian.

Experience of being accountable for or manager of a front line service would be an advantage.
